Empowering Adolescents in Conflict Sensitivity and Peacebuilding for Save the Children in Lebanon

DeveloAID partnered with Save the Children in Lebanon to strengthen adolescent engagement in peacebuilding through conflict sensitivity training and toolkit development. This initiative targeted youth aged 14 to 24, aiming to equip them with skills to promote social cohesion and address conflicts constructively within their communities.

Project Overview

This multi-phase project combined training, toolkit creation, and practical applications to empower adolescents as agents of peace. It included a series of structured workshops, interactive activities, and the development of a comprehensive toolkit tailored for youth-focused conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding efforts.

DeveloAID’s Role

DeveloAID played a pivotal role in the project’s design, implementation, and delivery:

  • Toolkit Development: Created the Adolescents’ Peacebuilding Engagement Toolkit (APET), featuring four progressive stages: Reflect, Understand, Create, and Evaluate. The toolkit provided practical guidance for engaging youth in structured peacebuilding activities.
  • Training Delivery: Facilitated workshops for Save the Children staff and youth facilitators, covering conflict sensitivity principles, context analysis, and tools such as conflict mapping and the “Do No Harm” framework. Sessions were designed to be interactive, promoting dialogue and critical thinking.
  • Capacity Building: Supported facilitators in customizing activities for diverse youth groups, ensuring inclusivity and cultural relevance.

Key Activities

The program was implemented through a six-session cycle:

  1. Reflect: Encouraged self-awareness and understanding of personal experiences with conflict.
  2. Understand: Explored conflict dynamics, entry points for peace, and methods to analyze conflicts.
  3. Create: Focused on conflict mediation, negotiation, and the development of action plans for community peacebuilding.
  4. Evaluate: Assessed the sustainability and impact of peace activities, fostering a culture of reflection and continuous improvement.

The project achieved significant outcomes:

  • Empowered Adolescents: Youth participants gained practical skills in conflict prevention, mediation, and community engagement, enhancing their role as peacebuilders.
  • Enhanced Facilitation: Save the Children staff were equipped to cascade training, ensuring the program’s sustainability and scalability.
  • Community Impact: The activities fostered dialogue and collaboration among youth, strengthening social cohesion and reducing tensions in diverse communities.
